FAQs
Do I need to pay to make a Booking?
Mostly...No! Making a bookinng itself is completely free, simply click on the Pay later option at the bottom of the booking form. If your event is over a week away, you'll be permitted to pay later. If your event is within the week, you won't have this option. BUT!! It's always possible to get in touch and talk to 1 of our admins who we're sure will be able to help with arrangements.
What am I Paying For When I Book A DJ?
This is a very highly discussed subject and can get a little complicated sometimes, but we'll keep this as straight forward as possible.
- Performance Time (The time the event starts)
A DJ (like any professional), has a set hourly rate. Contrary to what people think, it's most often pretty close to Minimum wage, maybe a couple of £ more.
- Travel (Time + Fuel)
On top of that hourly rate your DJ will most likely have to travel, which involves fuel costs, as well as their time to travel to and from your venue.
- Equipment (Set up & De Rig Time)
They will also need to bring equipment, booths, stands, podiums, speakers, microphones, lights, laptops, controllers and cables AND set it all up before you even arrive, then take it all down when you're finished having fun and heading home.
Venue size/capacity/number of guests determines how much equipment would be needed for every guest at every edge of the room to have the same level of sound and light to enjoy the athmosphere. It takes approx 1 hour to completely set up and sound check an intimate (under 100ppl) event.
Bigger events & more guests = more equipment = more time to set up & dismantle. (Except walk-in events).
- Tax
We all pay TAX on everything in some shape or form. DJs being either self employed or employed by a company are a service and are also required to pay TAX. This, similar to buying a can of beans at the supermarket, filters down to the customer as a miniscule amount calculated into the cost of the DJ. That means 20% (on average) of your DJ cost, doesn't even belong to the DJ as they will have to give that to the Tax Man.
- MUSIC
Yip! Probably a DJs biggest expense. The music. Every week there's new music that people are going to want to hear and a DJ needs access to EVERY, single song ever written & produced over a huge range of places to download, buy and stream from all at the same time. How crazy is that?!
99% of DJs don't make their own music and the 1% that do, still need to pay to make that music. Every (legal) time any song in the entire world is played and streamed, someone is getting money from it.
That means, a DJ needs to have a downloaded library of tracks (on average around 20,000 of the most popular songs @ between 50p - £2 per track) OR subscriptions to multiple DJ Pools, AND Premium tier subscriptions to streaming platforms like spotify, Soundcloud, Deezer, YouTube etc all at the same time. Roughly costing in total above £50 per month, every month. So there's most likely a small portion of the total DJ Cost that goes towards their music.
So Ultimately DJ Cost is-
- Performance (between 2 - 12 hours)
- Set Up & De Rig Time (2+ hours)
- Travel (time + fuel @ roughly 25p per mile)
- Tax %
- Music %
